Best Time to Undercoat Your Car in Ontario

Many Ontario drivers think about undercoating just before winter, but the condition and preparation of the vehicle matter more than one perfect calendar date.

Ask Tim About Your Vehicle

Before winter road salt

Late summer and fall are convenient times to inspect the underside and arrange protection before regular salt exposure begins.

Can you undercoat at other times?

Depending on the product and application conditions, undercoating may be possible at other times of year. A technician should follow the coating manufacturer’s directions for temperature, moisture and surface preparation.

Should rust be cleaned first?

Loose scale, dirt and contamination can interfere with coverage. Heavily corroded areas may need cleaning and assessment before a protective coating is applied.

What about wet weather?

Some products tolerate residual moisture better than others. That does not mean every coating should be applied to a wet, dirty surface. Preparation should match the chosen product.

What should be avoided?

Coatings should not be applied indiscriminately to brakes, hot exhaust components, sensors or other areas where they could create problems.
