Flex Pipe Repair vs Replacement

A flex pipe allows an exhaust system to move with the engine. Once it splits or corrodes, you may hear a rough exhaust noise or notice a leak near the front of the vehicle.

Ask Tim About Your Vehicle

What does a flex pipe do?

The flexible section reduces stress on exhaust joints as the engine rocks on its mounts. A failed flex section can leak even when the rest of the system looks sound.

Signs of a damaged flex pipe

Common signs include a louder exhaust near the engine, a rasping sound on acceleration and visible damage to the braided section. These symptoms can overlap with other leaks.

Can a flex pipe be welded?

A failed flexible portion usually needs a replacement flex section rather than welding the braid closed. Where surrounding pipe is solid, a new section may be welded into place.

What affects the cost?

Vehicle layout, access, pipe diameter, corrosion and whether adjoining flanges or catalytic-converter connections are damaged all affect the work.

When more than the flex pipe needs attention

A heavily rusted adjoining pipe or seized flange can change the scope of the repair. It is worth checking the complete joint before deciding.
