1. Your car suddenly sounds louder
A new deep rumble, roar or sharp exhaust note can mean a hole in the muffler, a cracked pipe or a failed connection. The location of the leak matters more than the volume alone.
2. You hear rattling underneath
A loose heat shield, broken hanger or internal muffler baffle can rattle, especially at idle or when accelerating. A visual inspection helps distinguish these problems.
3. There is visible rust or a hole
Surface rust is common in Ontario, but flaking metal, perforations and weakened seams can allow exhaust gases to escape. Not every rusty muffler can be welded safely.
4. The tailpipe or muffler hangs low
A failed rubber mount or rusted hanger can leave the exhaust unsupported. Continued driving can stress other joints or let parts drag on the road.
5. You hear ticking or hissing
An exhaust leak can make a ticking or hissing noise. Sometimes the source is a gasket or flange farther forward, rather than the muffler.
6. You notice exhaust smells
Exhaust fumes in the passenger cabin require immediate attention because of carbon monoxide risk. Stop driving, move to fresh air and have the vehicle checked before using it again.
7. The noise changes as the engine warms up
Metal expands as it heats, so a leaking joint may sound different cold versus hot. Describe when the noise happens to help pinpoint the fault.
Repair or replace?
If sound metal remains around a damaged joint or pipe, a targeted repair may be possible. A muffler with extensive corrosion or a failed internal section usually needs replacement.
