A hole in the muffler or tailpipe
Road salt and moisture can weaken exhaust metal over time. A small opening may create a surprisingly loud rumble.
A broken flex pipe
The flexible section absorbs engine movement. When its braided section or inner pipe fails, the exhaust may sound rough or loud near the front of the vehicle.
A separated flange or failed gasket
Exhaust joints can leak when bolts rust away or sealing surfaces deteriorate. Sometimes a flange repair is more sensible than replacing an entire exhaust assembly.
A loose heat shield
A thin metal shield often causes buzzing rather than a true exhaust roar. Identifying the difference avoids replacing the wrong part.
Why it is louder when accelerating
More exhaust flow under load can make a leak easier to hear. Note whether the sound happens at idle, on acceleration or only at a particular engine speed.
When to stop driving
If exhaust fumes enter the cabin, stop using the vehicle until the leak is assessed. A dragging exhaust or one contacting fuel or brake components also needs prompt attention.
Can it be repaired?
Many localized pipe and hanger problems can be repaired when the surrounding metal is sound. Severely rusted components may need replacement.
